I sat in the lounge, flipping through Beyond Solid. It wasn’t only a signed copy. Mr. Endor had included a dedication. That was unexpected considering he hadn’t met any of us until the first day in class.

“Better an unstoppable force than an immovable object,” I read aloud. “Psychics are weird, Horace.”

“Technically you are one, so I hope you mean that as a compliment.”

“It’s not a bad thing, just mystifying.”

“I suppose that fits your bill.” He sat in the chair across from me. “Or beak if you prefer.”

“Why’s life so hard?”

“Tough question. I didn’t get all that much of it. For what it’s worth, the afterlife’s no picnic either. Glad Ramon’s not in it with me.”

“Me too.” I sighed. “If only I could see him. But I know that’s not likely to happen tonight.”

“Hey.” Ed held up his copy of Beyond Solid. “Mine had a dedication.”

“Mine too.” I read it again. “Tell me yours.”

“Grace is gained, then lost for the sake of repairing the world.” Ed shook his head.

“Yours makes more sense than mine.”

“Ditto.”

“Okay, then what do you think it means?”

“Don’t stand still.” Ed pointed at the swoop-shaped logo on his sneakers. “Just do it. Now interpret mine.”

“If you’ve got a penny, give a penny. If you need a penny, take a penny.” I winked.

“Wow.” He rolled his eyes. “Deep.”

“Maybe we should switch copies.”

“Nah, I already made notes in mine. Stuff I want to talk about with Mom when I go see her on Wednesday in Danvers.”

“So she moved in already?”

“Still settling in. She called, told me Crow was right. She’s staying there.”

“That’s awesome.”

“Thanks again.”

“You don’t have to keep saying that, Ed.”

“Big help equals big thanks. I really wish I could return the favor.”

“You’re sort of doing that later.”

“Touché.” He glanced at the clock and changed the subject. “I think we’re going to learn a lot from Mr. Endor.”

“Agreed. Something tells me we’ll need it.”

The dinner bell rang.

After not eating lunch, my stomach needed a full meal so I had a generous helping of meatloaf, broccoli, and potatoes. Cosmo and Hope talked about Bishop’s Row tryouts, which took my mind off the nerve-racking outing later.

Once finished, I went upstairs, changed into the sweats I often wore as pajamas, and headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth. That was all part of the plan.

We’d be cutting it close. Lights out on weekdays was a half-hour later for second years, but we’d still be close to the wire. It took fifteen minutes to walk from the boarding house to the hospital, and we had to get there before Dr. Frampton’s shift change.

When I made it to the lounge, Ed was already there. We’d already discussed everything as I walked him back from Messing so we left without a word.

Even with our ghosts floating behind us as backup, my gut churned. No matter how distressed Mom’s punishments made us, it was never enough. We walked like that all the way past campus before Ed addressed my jumpiness.

“You’re waiting for the other shoe.
